October 2010
CLUB NIGHT We had a
very interesting talk from Alan Matthews who runs a gallery/shop in Ripon. He told
us how he had started painting for a hobby and eventually turned it into a full
time occupation alongside his gallery. He gave a
demonstration of his art, skilfully painting from the side of the canvas whilst
talking to our members. His
gallery has diversified into crafts of many types alongside his paintings. It was a
very entertaining evening, even the artists amongst us were impressed.
KNOTFORD NOOK We had a
club stand with ten cars. Some members who were new to this type of event were
surprised at the diversity of vehicles on show. The
weather was very kind to us and we had a pleasant sociable day.
PUB NIGHT
The
Queens Head at Kettlesing– excellent food with a well attended evening
CLUB
RUN 12 cars,
22 people and a dog left the Sidings, after coffee and set off for 88 miles of “
good MG motoring” across the Howardian Hills, through
wooded valleys, little stone villages and onto the moors via Helmsley.
Sheep,
gates, and a special free car wash were all taken in their stride!
The
overnight rain had produced a ford with a torrent of water flowing. An
excellent meal was to be had at The Hall Inn, Thornton-le-Dale.
A few
members visited the nearby classic car garage with motor museum and some went
browsing in the
adjacent antique stalls/junk shops before the return home. The
weather held and most hardy souls had their hoods down, gaining full advantage
of the fine scenery including views of
the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and for Heartbeat fans, Scripps Garage at
Aidensfield (Goathland.) Michael
and Roger enjoyed organising this day out and appreciate the support.
NORTHUMBERLAND WEEKEND Fifteen
cars and occupants made their way up to Warkworth on Friday 3rd September. We
enjoyed two/three very good nights at the Warkworth House Hotel.
As the
hotel could only accommodate thirteen couples the other two couples were in BB
across the road but had
evening meals with everyone else. The evening meals were excellent but outfaced
many of us. Saturday
was a day left to your own devises, many took the opportunity to walk some of
the coastline.
Personally we went to Craster (as did many others) walked to Dunstanburgh
Castle and then went on to Seahouses. Others
ventured further afield and went to Lindisfarne. There are
many other attractions in the area so perhaps another visit is to be
recommended. Sunday
saw us up bright and early and after a filling breakfast we set off to Belsay
Hall for the start of MG Northumbria’s Heritage Run. Some
found the room for the bacon bap provided, many wrapped it up for lunch. After an
enjoyable run through the Northumbria countryside, passing many heritage sites
that could be revisited later, we
finished at Seaton Delaval Hall. (newly acquired by the National Trust)
The late
afternoon was spent there. The club
won an award for the highest attendance on the run and Chris & Dorothy Robinson
won a trophy for the best visiting MG. Monday
saw members slowly returning home by various routes. The
weather was perfect all weekend. Many
thanks to Roger & Gloria for organising such a good weekend.
